Writing Awards & Competition Placements

My first—and loudest—editor admonished me early in my career not to attach too many feelings, good-bad-homicidal or otherwise, to writing contest results. But, we live in a laurel-obsessed society, so it is with a moderate amount of false humility I present some of the nods I’ve received for my writing efforts over the years. Try not to be wowed.

“This sports roundup is a good formula, well executed, with great photos and write-ups on each of the teams, as well as the individual athletes. It’s a lot of work, well worth it for what it must mean to the athletes and the school programs. Good advertising support, which means it is valued, as it should be.”

Online Anonymity Unleashes Disdain by Benjamin J. Gohs
“Good points being made here. This issue is one that many newspapers struggle with. Additionally, the emotional reaction from members of the community, readers and non-readers alike can generate frustration.”

Area Businesses Help Form New Group to Stop Enbridge Line 5 by Benjamin J. Gohs
“As the editor of a hyper-local publication myself, I understand why someone might be hesitant to include more of a national perspective. However, a national perspective is exactly what this story needed. A story regarding the integrity of America’s oil and gas pipelines couldn’t be more relevant. This story tells the feelings of the local community extremely well, but would have benefited from including more context as to why the local business community was so opposed to the continued use of the pipelines.”
